Sendero Verde, NYC - The tallest Passive House building in the world
Sendero Verde, located in East Harlem, New York, stands as a groundbreaking model for sustainable urban living. Developed under the city's SustainNYC initiative—which champions high-quality, affordable housing—this innovative project consists of three mixed-use buildings. Listen to the designer Dylan Martello from Steven Winter Associates and the Passive House certifier Dragoș-Ionut Arnăutu from the Passive House Institute bring their unique perspectives on the project.
At its core, Sendero Verde is a Passive House marvel—not only is it designed to meet rigorous energy-efficiency standards, but it also holds the distinction of being the tallest Passive House-certified building in the world. The development includes 709 affordable housing units integrating community resources such as educational facilities, commercial areas, green outdoor spaces, and support services operated by Union Settlement—one of New York City's oldest social service organizations.
Sendero Verde is more than just housing—it's a blueprint for resilient, sustainable, and inclusive urban communities.
