Mind the Gap: Perception vs Reality in Passive House Costs
Join us for our next iPHA webinar!
Our upcoming iPHA will discuss an important yet often underdiscussed topic: the cost of constructing energy-efficient buildings. The event will feature a combination of presentations from building professionals and an interactive roundtable discussion, hosted by Caroline Ashe Brady, Chairperson of the Passive House Association of Ireland.
The event will feature three speakers who will provide overviews of various building projects. James York from Collective Architecture will present a 90-home, mid-market-rent development for the West of Scotland Housing Association. In addition to the design and construction approach, he will provide a capital cost comparison to discuss the project's financial aspects. OCC Construction’s John O’Connell will provide the audience with insights into a 26-unit housing scheme located in Ireland, and built to a conventional/council specification versus the Passive House standard. Besides discussing cost differences for specific building features, he will aim to give the audience an accessible, real-project view of where additional costs arise and why comparisons vary between developments. Berhold Kaufmann from the Passive House Institute will examine an example project from Germany and will explain how the general rise in construction costs makes the premium for efficiency measures smaller and how the investments in Passive House measures can futureproof a project for further price hikes, especially when the renewable energy is lower during nights and in winter.
The webinar will include time for a roundtable discussion, with a mix of questions from the moderator and the audience.
